Online Distance Learning Programs

College and university students have long dreamt of being able to attend classes while in their pajamas or at midnight, if necessary. With the advances made in technology, the convenience of higher education online has become a reality. Students the world over can breathe a sigh of relief as it is now possible to get a degree on their own terms.

Traditionally a student had to attend classes on campus if they wanted to expand their educational horizons. That meant they had to move to campus, or very close to it, attend classes when they were offered, and have a limited amount of time for homework, a paid job, and a social life. Now a higher education is possible for those who have full-time jobs, families to care for, and those that cannot attend brick-and-mortar classes.

Online classes are available for more than 2,500 online degrees and 6,000 individual courses at a number of highly-recognizable colleges and universities. In fact, many main stream higher education institutions are starting to offer online classes and online degree programs for the convenience of non-traditional students.

Here are some of the ways getting a higher education online is more convenient than the traditional route:

- There is no fixed schedule for attending class. You can attend class when it best suits your life and your schedule. If you have three hours from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. and are a night owl, this might be the perfect time to take an online class toward a degree you've been dreaming of.

- You also don't have to attend classes in person. You may attend class from the comfort of your living room, your kitchen, or even your bedroom. Why not get your laptop and find a wi-fi signal out at a park. The fresh air might do you good. The sky's the limit as long as you have internet access, you're good to go!

- Everything can be accomplished online. There's no need to go to an instructor's office, to campus to purchase books, or visit your counselor's office. Registration can also be handled online. In fact, you're not limited to attending a local college or university because you can attend classes from across the country and still receive a quality education.

- Get your degree quicker. Quite often it's possible to finish all coursework online in two to three years, as opposed to the traditional route of taking four or more years. If you can obtain a degree in less time, you'll also save money. You may concentrate on one class at a time, if that's what you need, and pay for each class as you go.

- Achieve more balance in your life. If you work full-time and go to school part-time, meeting family obligations can sometimes be difficult. By being able to determine when you have time to devote to online classes, you can begin to balance all of those obligations and spend the needed time to be successful at each.

- You can't miss a class. With online coursework the lectures are either recorded in audio or video, possibly both. If you didn't understand what the instructor said, you can rewind the audio and listen again and again until you understand. You certainly can't do that with a traditional class.

- Online community. Sometimes with regular college or university classes, each person is in their own little world, just trying to pass the class themselves. With online classes, there are numerous ways the students and instructors can communicate - email, online forums, and message boards. There may also be webinars - online courses that everyone can take simultaneously - where there is immediate interaction.

Consider the choices available to you when thinking about pursuing a higher education. There is the traditional, on-campus route, but you can go more high-tech and attend classes on line. It is convenient because it meets your scheduling needs and can often save you money. It is something you will most likely want to check out for yourself to see if it suits your educational goals.

Financial Aid for Online Degree Programs

Often times people looking to further their education need to work full time. The option to earn a degree online works within their schedule, but what about their budget? Families are concerned with the cost of day-to-day living. That leaves them wondering, is financial aid available for people earning online degrees?

Times have changed dramatically in regard to paying for online educations. In the past, a person could only pay for their education with a credit card. Now, there are many ways to pay for distance learning including financial aid, grants, scholarships, employer tuition assistance, and student loans. In fact, nearly all of the financial avenues open to traditional students are available to those who get their education online.

Besides having the same financial assistance available, online students have one advantage that traditional students don't: many times the tuition a student pays for their classes will also cover the cost of textbooks and materials required for the class. If they aren't included in the cost of the class, they can be purchased used through online warehouses or auction sites, or they can simply be borrowed from a library. This can be a huge added savings for those earning their degree online.

Here are some types of financial assistance that may be available for an online student:

Employer tuition assistance: This option may not be available for every student, but you should check with your human resources department to see if it is. Of course, the course of study you choose will have to be related to your current position so that your attending classes will benefit the company. A little research into the courses available, what you are interested in, and what would beneficial to the company may lead to some financial assistance you didn't know was available.

Federal financial aid: Before signing up for a specific online degree, contact the financial aid advisor at the college or university that you've chosen to get your degree. Ask them which financial aid is available for those seeking an online degree. They should be able to give you specific help regarding the help available. They may also suggest that you obtain a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), fill it out, and send it in to see if you qualify and for how much.

If they're not terribly helpful, you can either consider a different financial institution that offers the same course and degree, or you can do further research into financial aid options on your own.

Student loans: If you don't qualify for a scholarship or grant, don't give up on your educational dream. There are organizations that provide student loans. You might even consider checking with your local bank to see if they have alternative student loans available. Don't accept "no" as an answer, continue to dig until you find something that will help you reach those educational goals.

Scholarships and grants: Check with your school of choice to see if they have any scholarships or grants specifically set aside for distance learners or those pursuing online degrees. Some of the more well-established universities, those who have been offering online learning for quite some time, may have just the scholarship you need. Be aware that some services will charge a fee to find scholarships for online learners. Don't fall for this ploy. Anything you need to learn about scholarships is found on the internet for free; it just may take a little bit of time and digging to find it.

Rest assured financial aid is available to those pursuing online educations. You may have to do a little bit of calling around and research before finding it, but it is definitely available. Make sure the college or university you're interested in is accredited, and you should have no problems finding the financial aid you need.
